Springboks star Wiese is given two-match ban for third yellow of the season

-

LEICESTER Tigers back-row star Jasper Wiese has been handed a two-match Premiership ban.

The Springboks number eight was yellow carded for a late hit on Callum Sheedy in the victory over Bristol Bears on Boxing Day.

It was Wiese’s third sin-binning of the season, meaning he appeared before an independent disciplinary panel on Wednesday evening.

The ban means Wiese will miss tomorrow’s home match against Newcastle Falcons and the trip to Midland rivals Wasps on Sunday, January 9.

Tigers are already coping without number eight option Hanro Liebenberg due to his shoulder injury.

Marco van Staden went off against Bristol with a head injury while fellow South African Cyle Brink left the club yesterday to join the Bulls.

Wiese’s other yellow cards this season came in round seven away at Northampton Saints and round 10 at home to Harlequins – both were for no arms tackles.

The 26-year-old also received two yellows in his first season at Tigers, as well as a red card against Wasps.

Meanwhile, Wasps fly-half Jacob Umaga will miss the next three games after his red card received against London Irish on Boxing Day.

Umaga was sent off for making a dangerous tackle on Ollie HassellCollins in the 76th minute of the 38-30 victory at the CBS Arena.

The 23-year-old will miss Gallagher Premiership fixtures against Sale and Leicester and the Heineken Champions Cup clash with Toulouse on January 15.

Charlie Atkinson is likely to deputise at fly-half at the AJ Bell Stadium today in his first appearance of the season following a knee injury.
