ANIMAL rescue centres are bracing themselves for a flurry of new arrivals post-festive season – and the problem is expected to be worse than usual this year.

The number of dogs and cats people took on during the lockdowns of the pandemic rocketed and now rescue charities are starting to reap the fall-out as families realise the commitment they have talen on.

The Dogs Trust has reported a 39 per cent increase in phone calls to hand over dogs from July 12 – a week before Freedom Day, when restrictions were lifted, was confirmed.

The problem is expected to become worse in the new year, with January usually a peak time when people make the decision to give up their pet.

Charities and rescue centres are on the lookout for new responsible owners to come forward who can offer animals a good and lasting home.

The RSPCA’s Woodside Animal Centre and Leicester Animal Aid have a number of pets needing homes.

Here are 33 which are up for adoption across Leicestershire:

1: ALICE AND ALFIE

This adorable duo come as a pair with officers comparing them to the cartoon dog lovers, Lady and The Tramp.

Alice is a 15-month-old lurcher and Alfie, one, is a beagle cross. They both enjoy the company of other dogs but like to stay in homes as a pair.

They are almost house trained and travel well. leicesteranimalaid.org.uk

2: ANDY

Andy is a Staffordshire bull terrier/ Jack Russell terrier cross and is one year old.

He will be perfect for families with the little ones as he loves to play. A new home with children would be fantastic for this little lap dog.

6: ELLIE

This black kitty is seven years old and loves her cuddles.

She would suit living with a family with young children and will need both indoor and outdoor play.

She prefers not to stay with other pets but loves to interact with all members of the household.

7: FERN

This three-year-old greyhound is laid-back and enjoys her homely comforts.

The friendly pup prefers to be with an owner that can accompany her throughout the day and another canine companion to snuggle up to.

She is an ex-racer who needs to be kept on a lead during walks.

8: FLEUR

Fleur is a playful 18-month-old German shepherd crossbreed.

The team at Leicester Animal Aid said her previous owners may not have been kind and gentle to her, so she takes time to trust new owners.

She is looking for experienced owners in an adult-only home who will only leave her alone for short periods of time.
