Jail fugitive ignores own deadline to give himself up to police
PAROLE DATE
A FUGITIVE robber who appeared on a podcast after fleeing an open prison has failed to hand himself in despite a promise to do so.
Greggor Grey, 42, who was serving a life sentence for robbery, fled HMP Sudbury, in Derbyshire, on May 15.
Grey, who has links to Leicester, appeared on The Chop Shop Podcast, which prides itself on letting guests “talk loose”.
He criticised the justice system for his Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence – under which he has served 17 years so far – and admitted to “crying himself to sleep every night” while he was inside.
IPP sentences, under which prisoners could be released after serving a minimum term only if the Parole Board was convinced they were safe, was abolished in 2012, but release was not applied retrospectively.
Grey claimed on the podcast that he was not hiding from anybody since his escape.
“Right now you’ve got a man talking to you on the run. I’m not hiding from nobody, you understand? My name is Greggor Grey,” he said.
He said he would return before his parole hearing on June 14.
Derbyshire Police said that Grey was still wanted.
A spokesman said: “Officers continue to carry out inquiries to locate Greggor Grey, who absconded from Sudbury open prison on May 15.
“Anyone who sees him, or knows of his whereabouts, is urged to contact Derbyshire police immediately and not to approach him.”
Grey is black, 5ft 11in and of stocky build. He is known to use the aliases Moses Blake, McGreggor Gray and Marcus Osbourne.
Anyone with information should call Derbyshire Police on 101, quoting reference 688-150522. In an emergency, call 999.
