THE landlord of a well-known city centre pub has announced he will be pulling his last pint next month.

Alex Hylton will be leaving The Salmon, in Butt Close Lane, after three years behind the bar.

His departure will coincide with the pub’s 151st birthday.

Alex made the “very sad” announcement about his decision to leave on the pub’s Facebook page.

He said: “The past three years has been a wonderful adventure and I’m incredibly proud of what the pub has become and to have played a small part in its magical history.

“The time is right to part ways with Black Country Ales, who have been fantastic partners throughout a very challenging period for pubs.”

Alex revealed that he would be returning to stand-up comedy, with which many people in the city will already associate him.

He has appeared regularly at Leicester Comedy Festival, and won the prize for best show at the 2020 event.

“I am returning to my career in stand up full-time, but I will still be in Leicester and will of course be popping in for a pint,” he said. “I understand Black Country Ales are in the process of selecting the next licensee of The Salmon and that will be announced in due course.”

Alex thanked the pub’s staff and regulars. “I want to say thank you to the brilliant team of staff that I have been so lucky to work with, who have poured more passion and love into the pub than any employer could ever ask,” he said. “But finally, a big, massive cheers to the best regulars in the world.

“You have welcomed me into your pub with open arms, supported the pub through a global pandemic, inspired me with your generosity to the Project Breakfast Club and Ukraine appeal. You have given me enough memories to last a lifetime.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know you all. Thank you for having me.”

Alex launched his Project Breakfast Club in January, to support an existing programme for children at Lancaster Academy.

It provides a free, daily breakfast for pupils who might otherwise go without.

As part of the fund-raising, Alex has organised an evening of comedy, which will take place at The Y Theatre, in the city centre, this evening.

The line-up will include Jack Campbell, Catherine Bohart, Alisdair Beckett King, Tadiwa Mahlunge, Jason Neale, Lindsey Santoro and Kiri Pritchard-McLean.

You will be able to see Alex at the new Sommar Leicester on July 12, doing a work-in-progress performance of his Edinburgh Fringe Show.

He will then be at Edinburgh Fringe for the full run, with his solo show, a stand-up rom-com called Love, Probably.
