A CARER has lost her licence after a drunken crash she had no memory of.

Sharon Davies, 42, was driving her Vauxhall Corsa along Homefield Road in Sileby when she had the collision.

Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard a man living in the street went out to see what had happened after hearing the noise at about 1am on June 5.

Prosecutor Sally Bedford told the court: “He had gone to bed and was awoken by a loud smash and grinding noise.

“He went outside and saw the defendant’s vehicle had been involved in a crash. The vehicle was rolling back and forth as if she was trying to get it going again and the engine was revving.

“He approached and there was a strong smell of alcohol. It was indicated she had had a couple.”

The police were called and Davies was given a roadside breath test that showed she was over the limit.

She was given a further test at a police station and was found to have a level of 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes. Representing herself in court, Davies, of Grange Street, Loughborough, told the magistrates: “To be honest, I don’t recall the incident at all. “It’s not my normal behaviour and I don’t normally drink to that excess.

“I don’t understand it to this day. I’ve been working as a carer for the past 20 years – mostly with the elderly with dementia – and I’ve not been in trouble before.

“I’ve had some personal problems I’ve been going through. I got injured in the incident – I’ve got a sternum fracture.”

She said she worked near to her home in Loughborough and would be able to carry on working without her driving licence.

The magistrates banned Davies from driving for 20 months. She was also fined £276 and ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

It’s not my normal behaviour. I don’t understand it to this day
