BURGLARS raided a couple’s home as they slept in the latest of a string of carrelated thefts in the Stoneygate area of Leicester.

The pair woke up on Tuesday, July 5 to find someone had smashed their way through a side door, taken their keys and driven off in their car.

Police say there has been an increase in the amount of car crimes in Stoneygate recently.

Officers are now stepping up patrols in the area in a bid to catch those responsible.

One of the victims of the latest incidnet, who did not wish to be named, said he and his wife slept through the raid.

However, they woke up to find his wife’s Mercedes GLS was missing and thieves had been through “everything” in the downstairs rooms.

The 28-year-old said: “They had been through all the rooms downstairs and gone through all the coats in the cupboard.

“And then we saw that they had found our car keys.”

Neighbours’ CCTV footage showed a group of four people, wearing hoods, breaking into the side door of their house. The man said the thieves also snapped the lock mechanism on his old PVC door.

“There are lots of these types of doors that were fitted in the 1990s that are probably not anti-snap,” he said.

“We don’t really have to deal with crime in this area.

“But recently, this seems to be a problem.

“The police officer told us this type of crime is high on their priority list at the moment and Stoneygate and surrounding areas are a target.”

The resident added that he knew of two other recent incidents in the last few months, including another in his street.

A force spokesperson said: “Police are aware of recent incidents of vehicle crime in Stoneygate and the surrounding area.

“Officers are regularly patrolling the area in a bid to tackle the issue and any report made to us regarding a stolen vehicle will be thoroughly investigated.”
