Say hi to park hives
BRADGATE IS OFFERING THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET ITS BEES
BRADGATE Park is giving visitors the chance to Meet the Bees.
Sessions are taking place every Sunday this month, led by Liga Orlovska, of Leicester business Honey Craft.
They are taking place in the Walled Garden, which is not usually open to visitors.
Liga said: “I grew up with bees. My mum was a beekeeper, so there always was the smell of honey and wax in our house.
“My mum was one of those crazy beekeepers who wore only the veil – beekeeping hat.
“I started to keep bees during the pandemic here in Leicester and the more I learn about them, the more I want to share my findings with others.”
Participants are supplied with a beekeeping suit and gloves for the session and will take part in an inspection together.
They will open up the hive and try to spot the queen.
Liga said: “Bees are such an interesting insect. They are very well organised, each with their own job inside the hive.
“By inviting visitors to look into the hive and learn about bees, we are aiming to inspire everyone to care more for any pollinator insects.”
James Dymond, director of Bradgate Park Trust, said: “We’re really pleased to be hosting Honey Craft in the Walled Garden at Bradgate.
“This will be a great partnership that enhances the wildlife value of our site but also brings people to the park to see a new part of the Bradgate House ruins and learn about these amazing creatures.”
Children are welcome to the sessions and suits can be supplied, but they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
All participants are required to bring wellington boots or sturdy shoes and the sessions are not suitable for anyone who is allergic to bee stings. Sessions cost £37 per person and must be booked.
The Bradgate Park Apiary was built with the support of the Sir Thomas White Loan Charity.
