A COUNTY charity has struck it lucky on the lottery after securing a £10,000 windfall.

Hope For Hunger was awarded the money from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK.

Hope For Hunger delivers meals and essential items across Leicestershire.

A spokesman said members were “excited to embrace the impact” that the funding would have to provide a greater amount of support to those who need it.

Currently, Hope For Hunger delivers meals with the option of seven different meal choices to select from, as well as essential items such as milk, bread, toilet paper and beans.

The charity focuses on these specifically as it believes that these are things that nobody should ever be forced to go without.

The grant will help it to expand its list of necessities to the community by adding new things available for selection and next day delivery.

Daljit Ghai, a trustee at the charity, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, this grant means that we can expand our charity by adding more people to our team who are just as passionate about making a change to the devasting effect of food poverty as we are.

“Grateful for having already connected with so many, Hope For Hunger aims to connect with thousands more who seek our support in their time of need.

“This National Lottery funding has helped us in a myriad of ways and we are eternally grateful for the continued belief and support that has been shown for Hope For Hunger’s cause, our mission has just begun.”

People can donate unwanted items to the charity, which it can then sell to provide more funding for their cause.

National Lottery players raise more than £30 million a week for good causes across the UK. The National Lottery Community Fund distributes a share of this to projects to support people and communities to prosper and thrive.

During the pandemic, in 2020 alone, the fund distributed almost £1 billion to charities and community organisations across the UK.
