South Korean Black Eagles roar over the county
AT first glance, some people may have thought they had just seen the world famous Red Arrows aerial display team in the skies above Leicestershire, except... the colour scheme did not fit.
It was in fact the South Korean Black Eagles display team hurtling through the skies over Leicestershire.
The unit passed over Leicester and the surrounding county and south Derbyshire then Staffordshire on Saturday evening.
A number of people in Leicestershire managed to get photographs of the team, which is appearing at several air shows this month, as it roared overhead.
Eight of the black, white and yellow aircraft appeared to be flying in tight formation for much of their journey across the region, with a ninth close by throughout.
Like the Red Arrows, the Black Eagles’ jets are equipped with smoke generators to add to the impressive sky-high displays.
Damo Pedge managed to get a quick snap of the jets as they passed over New Parks, Leicester.
Damo said: “It was fantastic to see, the roar of the jet engines was really loud and their synchronised formation must take some skills.
“To learn they are South Korean Black Eagles is amazing. Sharing our airspace with other military display teams is great.”
The Red Arrows – officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – were spotted in our skies earlier this month as they made their way back north from Oxfordshire to RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire.
Their route on Sunday, July 3 took them over Harborough and north over villages including Goadby, Tugby, Somerby and Waltham on the Wolds.
