High finishes for PGA Cup selection Cort
MATTHEW Cort (Beedles Lake) has had two more high finishes in top tournaments around the country in the last few days.
Cort, pictured, a PGA Cup golfer later this year for the third time, tied third in a big PGA South pro/am at Bearwood Lakes.
Then he finished in a similar position on the final leaderboard of the English PGA Championship at Bowood, a three-day event over 54 holes.
At Bearwood Lakes, Cort fired an eagle and four birdies for his tally of 40 points and was locked on this mark with two more professionals.
They were just one behind the joint winners on 41 points, including one of Cort’s PGA team-mates Simon Lilly (Wellingborough).
James Ruth (China Fleet Golf and Country Club), another PGA Cup man this year, emerged as the winner of the English title at Bowood.
Ruth he carded a three round total of nineunder-par 207 with his 70-70-67 rounds, one clear of the field.
Matthew Fieldsend (Drayton
Park) was runner up after 69-67-72 on eight-under 208, with Cort one stroke further back. After opening with a level par 72, Cort moved up the field with a fourunder 68 in his second session to be tied in second place with Ruth, four behind Fieldsend. But on the final day, Ruth claimed the crown after his final round of five-under 67, with Fieldsend (72) second, and Cort third on three-under 69.
He went out in two-under 34, and came back in one-under 35, with four birdies and only one bogey on his final card.
Jack Malone (Rugby) finished fourth after his 72-70-70-212 return.
Cort won this title in 2018 when the championship was decided at Sounton GC.
Earlier this month, Cort became the PGA national champion at Slaley Hall Hotel and GC in Northumberland.
