Takeaway plan passed
DOMINOES MOVING IN TO FORMER BANK BUILDING
PLANS to transform a former high street bank into a Domino’s pizza takeaway have been approved.
The chain will move in to the former Santander branch – in a grade II-listed building – in Market Street, Ashby.
Pegasus Group, which put forward the proposal, said: “The site is a long-term vacant unit and is therefore creating a dead frontage and does not generate any activity or footfall at the site.
“The proposal would result in the reoccupation of the unit, improving the footfall and providing job opportunities.
“As such, it would enhance the vitality and viability of the area.
The site is close to Zamani’s Italian restaurant.
Pegasus Group said Domino’s was a takeaway and would not affect others’ trade.
“The closest hot food takeaway to this site is The Fish Inn, located at 85A Market Street.
“The takeaway is located approximately 240m to the north east of the site and therefore the proposals will not result in an intensification of hot food takeaways in this location,” it said.
North West Leicestershire District Council planning officers agreed that the proposal would not create “a cluster of takeaways” in Ashby.
“Although there are restaurants offering takeaway services in the immediate vicinity of the site along Market Street, these establishments would be considered a restaurant, therefore not contributing to the number of hot food takeaways,” they said in their report.
Officers said Domino’s would make a “positive contribution” to the variety of shops in Market Street and be of benefit to the economy.
