Colleagues unite in tribute to much-loved firefighter Andy
LOVED ONES JOIN MOMENT OF SILENT REFLECTION
LOUGHBOROUGH firefighters have paid a touching tribute to a colleague whose sudden death while on leave led to an outpouring of condolences from around the country.
Lined up outside the town’s station, firefighters and other emergency staff, as well as family and friends, held a minute’s reflection in honour of Andy Watt, who had served at Loughborough Fire Station for the past 16 years.
The moment was mirrored around Leicestershire, with crews paying tribute to a “big personality” and a “true professional”.
A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “It has been heartwarming to see an outpouring of love for Andy across our social media posts, and the comments and stories shared – alongside all of the family members, friends and colleagues who observed a minute’s reflection at various locations across our service – are a real reflection of his personality and show just how respected Andy was.”
Before becoming a firefighter, Andy served in Northern Ireland and Cyprus with 1st Battalion the Staffordshire Regiment.
He joined Loughborough Fire Station’s Green Watch in 2006 and quickly established himself as “one of the kindest souls” according to fellow firefighters, who have set up a JustGiving appeal to support his family which has raised £3,900 so far.
A spokesman said: “When you think of Loughborough Station you think of certain characters, Andy was certainly one of them.
“He was part of the furniture and he will be sorely missed by his work family. His passing has come as a huge shock to everyone who knew him. This will leave a giant hole in many people’s lives, from immediate family to work colleagues and friends alike.
“Andy was one of the kindest souls you could ever meet. We will all miss him dearly and in true fire service tradition, everyone comes together in a time of need.
“Please join us in providing that initial financial support to Andy’s children and family by donating what you can afford towards this sad and tragic loss of one of life’s true diamond bright stars.”
