Shoppers and drivers warned of resurfacing

MAJOR roadworks are expected to bring disruption to shoppers visiting one of Leicestershire’s busiest retail parks later this month.

Resurfacing work on the A607 Melton Road and Asda roundabout will affect shoppers visiting Thurmaston Shopping Centre, council highways officials have warned.

There will be extensive road improvement works in the area over a 20-day period, starting on Monday, August 22.

Leicestershire County Council has agreed to a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order on the A607 Asda roundabout and all approaches. The highways authority said the work will be carried out overnight, from 8pm to 6am, and will not take place at weekends, to minimise disruption.

The roadworks, however, will mean restricted access and reduced speed limits that may result in congestion and delays.

The retail park is home to popular stores such as TK Maxx, Next, Poundland, Outfit, Boots, Sports Direct, Dunelm, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Starbucks and an

M&S Foodhall. It is the main shopping centre serving the north of Leicester, Syston and the surrounding area.

A county council spokesman said: “Temporary road closures are required, approaching Asda roundabout, on the A607 northbound, southbound and Melton Road, in Syston. They will be implemented for public safety to allow contractors to undertake major resurfacing works of the Asda roundabout and all adjoining roads.”

Access will be maintained between the old Melton Road, in Thurmaston, and Barkby Thorpe Lane, where the main entrance to the retail park is located. It will be achieved using temporary twoway traffic lights.

“The works will commence on Monday, August 22 for 20 nights,

Monday to Friday, from 8pm to 6pm each night, with no weekend working,” said the spokesperson.

They added that Barkby Thorpe Lane will be closed for one day, but the exact date has yet to be confirmed.

They said: “During the works a temporary parking restriction will be enforced on Melton Road between A607 roundabout and Britannia Way.

“The 7.5-tonne weight restriction will be suspended on Church Hill Road, Silverdale Drive and Humberstone Lane.

“A 30mph speed restriction will be enforced on A607 approaching Asda roundabout, northbound and southbound, between the junction of Checkland Road and the junction of Pontylue Way. The proposed alternative diversion routes will be signed on site.”
