RECORD HAUL OF 47 MEDALS FOR REPUBLIC OF LOUGHBOROUGH!
IF Loughborough was a country it would have finished sixth in the overall 2022 Commonwealth Games medal table – ahead of South Africa, Jamaica and Nigeria.
It has been an incredible Games for Loughborough athletes who amassed a record haul of 47 medals – 14 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze.
More than 120 Loughboroughlinked athletes – current students, alumni, those that train at the university and Loughborough College learners – appeared in Birmingham, representing 11 countries.
Loughborough highlights from the Games include the following: ■■Eight Loughboroughlinked players and support staff were part of England women’s hockey side that won a first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal after defeating Australia 2-1. These include current students Izzy Petter and Ellie Rayer and alumnae Giselle Ansley, Maddie Hinch and Laura Unsworth.
■■Chemistry graduate alumnus James Wilby earned a stunning gold in the 100m breaststroke final.
■■Student Daniel Wiffen won silver for Northern Ireland in the men’s 1500m freestyle swimming with a lifetime best and new Irish record of 14:15.79.
■■Student and para powerlifter Olivia Broome took silver, her maiden Commonwealth medal, after lifting a huge 111kg in her final attempt.
■■Loughborough-based Adam Peaty claimed a maiden
Commonwealth 50m breaststroke title.
