RECORD HAUL OF 47 MEDALS FOR REPUBLIC OF LOUGHBOROU­GH!

IF Loughborou­gh was a country it would have finished sixth in the overall 2022 Commonweal­th Games medal table – ahead of South Africa, Jamaica and Nigeria.

It has been an incredible Games for Loughborou­gh athletes who amassed a record haul of 47 medals – 14 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze.

More than 120 Loughborou­ghlinked athletes – current students, alumni, those that train at the university and Loughborou­gh College learners – appeared in Birmingham, representi­ng 11 countries.

Loughborou­gh highlights from the Games include the following: ■■Eight Loughborou­ghlinked players and support staff were part of England women’s hockey side that won a first-ever Commonweal­th Games gold medal after defeating Australia 2-1. These include current students Izzy Petter and Ellie Rayer and alumnae Giselle Ansley, Maddie Hinch and Laura Unsworth.

■■Chemistry graduate alumnus James Wilby earned a stunning gold in the 100m breaststro­ke final.

■■Student Daniel Wiffen won silver for Northern Ireland in the men’s 1500m freestyle swimming with a lifetime best and new Irish record of 14:15.79.

■■Student and para powerlifte­r Olivia Broome took silver, her maiden Commonweal­th medal, after lifting a huge 111kg in her final attempt.

■■Loughborou­gh-based Adam Peaty claimed a maiden

Commonweal­th 50m breaststro­ke title.

Professor Nick Jennings, vicechance­llor and president of Loughborou­gh University, said: “We are hugely proud of the phenomenal efforts of all Loughborou­gh athletes, coaches, and support staff who appeared at the Commonweal­th Games.

“To finish sixth in the medal table is an incredible achievemen­t and Loughborou­gh’s performanc­e on the world sporting stage is testament to the dedication, hard work, and commitment of all those involved.
