A CAST of brilliant women lead the pack in this sharp, funny wartime drama about a professional women’s baseball league.
Evoking the spirit of the hit 1992 movie of the same name, which starred Madonna and Geena Davis, this drama series tells the wider story of this generation of women who dreamed of playing pro baseball.
Abbi Jacobson plays Carson, who is first seen running for her train in Idaho, desperate to make it to the national try-outs.
She bumps into self-assured Greta, played by The Good Place star D’Arcy Carden, and they arrive at the playing field.
“I never knew this many girls played ball,” says Carson.
“How could ya?” says Greta. “There’s never been anything like this before.”
The bosses, in a bid to attract crowds, have decided to scout across the country for a ladies’ team, but are horrified to discover these particular ladies spit and swear and wear trousers.
Misogyny and sexism are in play as they try to change the players into ‘ladies’.
“Look at their calves, they’re enormous!” moans baseball bigwig Mr Baker (Kevin Dunn).
Meanwhile Max (Chanté Adams) is desperate to join the team – and she’s one of the best pitchers anyone has ever seen – but she’s told: “Coloured girls can’t play”.
The women also have to deal with obstacles from husbands and parents who don’t want them to play baseball.
As they battle through tough games, injuries, sexual awakenings and road trips across a rapidly changing America, this is a fun ride that you’ll back all the way to the end.
