AN OUTDOOR cinema, live music, street theatre and a giant inflatable slug all feature in a programme of free events and entertainment for families in Leicester this weekend.

Journeys Festivals International runs until tomorrow.

A Scandinavian-style street party called the Aalborg Karneval got the party started at the Clock Tower yesterday evening and there is still lots to see.

Seed will bring puppetry and inflatables to Jubilee Square today and tomorrow afternoon, with a one-man show featuring a baddy in the form of a giant slug.

Other highlights today and tomorrow include visits by the Liberty Angels, who will be watching over High Street, and live music in both Jubilee Square and High Street from the Liberty Orchestra and Liberty Palermo Music.

The festival is part of Leicester’s Summer in the City programme of events.

Deputy city mayor Councillor Piara Singh Clair said: “Our partners have organised some fantastic free entertainment that will ensure that everyone can enjoy Summer in the City.

“We are proud to support this fantastic programme of free events and hope that people of all ages will get out and about and enjoy everything that Leicester has to offer this summer.”

People will be able to take a trip on a Submercycle and Flycycle, while CastAway will bring aerial theatre to the Clock Tower area.

At 9pm today, the Southpaw Dance Company will bring its largescale production, Rush, to Crown House, in Lee Street. The spectacle promises to transform Lee Street with projection, mass movement and storytelling, as well as pyrotechnics, flashing strobe lighting and smoke effects.

Inspirate’s An Indian Summer also takes place today, bringing outdoor cinema to Leicester’s Green Dragon Square.

A screening of the Bollywood classic Hum Aapke Hain Kaun will take place at 2pm, while at 6.30pm, hot on the heels of the Lionesses’ success in Euro 2022 football tournament, Bend It Like Beckham will be shown.

Leicester’s beach, in Humberstone Gate, will continue to provide seaside fun until Wednesday, with the stage and stalls of the Leicester Belgrave Mela then taking over Humberstone Gate on Sunday, August 21, bringing Indian food, arts and culture to the city centre from 11am to 6pm.

The seaside theme returns to Humberstone Gate on Monday, August 22, with fun, games and circus skills with the Pirates of the City Centre.

The pirates will bring their free entertainment to Humberstone Gate from noon until 4pm from Monday, August 22 to Friday, August 26.

Bringing the summer fun to a close will be an outdoor spectacle “on an epic scale”. City Festival will bring live music, street theatre and a spectacular grand finale to the Summer in the City programme on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.

Admission to today’s outdoor cinema event in Green Gragon Square is free, but tickets need to be reserved in advance at the EventBrite website:
