NEWLY released drone footage has shown the progress being made on the construction of a pioneering £105 million National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) just over the Leicestershire border.

The purpose-built rehabilitation centre, which will be run by Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), will become the first of its kind in the UK when it opens in Stanford-onSoar, Rushcliffe.

Drone footage shows the five main pavilions of the ground floor of the NRC, which will include a café, staff area, the main gym, therapy space and education and research pavilions. The latest footage also shows the first and second floors which are nearing completion.

These will house the south-facing patient bedrooms overlooking the countryside, as well as some treatment spaces. NUH also released a time-lapse spanning from the early stages of the development to the current state.

The 70-bed facility will cost £16 million a year to run and sit alongside the new Ministry of

Defence’s Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), which has transformed Stanford Hall near Loughborough and been built for injured service personnel.

The centre hopes to improve the physical, cognitive, mental health and wellbeing of each of its patients, and it is expected the NRC will help 750 patients each year.

The NRC aims to improve life for people who have suffered potentially life-changing injury, trauma or illness, “making sure that they can regain a quality of life equivalent to or as close as possible to their life prior to injury or illness”. It will also include gyms, assessment and treatment rooms, social space and rehabilitation flats.

Ryan McCormack, project director for the construction, said the centre was on track to be completed by 2025. “The difference between where we were in September when we had just started the build, and where we are today is exciting,” he said.

“Our vision of the NRC is really taking shape. The build hasn’t been without its challenges – it’s always difficult trying to continue construction throughout the winter months.”
