Man jailed over thefts of coats and headphones

A MAN who stole coats and headphones during a crime spree has been jailed.

Shopping centres in Leicester and Beaumont Leys were among those targeted by the thief.

Simon Langton was arrested following the crimes, which were committed earlier this month.

On Friday, March 1, Langton entered a store in Leicester’s Highcross before leaving it having stolen a number of coats.

He struck again on Tuesday, March 12 when he broke into a store at the Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre. However, no items were reported to be stolen.

On Wednesday, March 13, Langton again struck in the Beaumont Leys area, first attempting to break into a shop in the Farrier Lane area.

He then went back to the Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre where he stole several items, including headphones and mobile phone accessorie­s.

Langton, of no fixed abode, was subsequent­ly arrested and appeared at Leicester Magistrate­s’ Court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary other than dwelling, one count of attempted burglary and one count of theft from a shop.

The 39-year-old reappeared before the court on Tuesday, March 16, where he was handed a sixmonth prison sentence. Speaking after sentencing, Pcso Tim Jones, from Leicesters­hire Police’s city centre beat team, said: “We know the impact offences of this nature can have on our local businesses, both emotionall­y and financiall­y. “We’ll continue to work closely with them to tackle such crimes and always encourage victims to report incidents to us so appropriat­e action can be taken.”
