Bosworth basketball team cock-a-hoop after hat-trick of titles

-

BOSWORTH Academy’s basketball team have reason to celebrate after winning the Leicestershire and Rutland County Schools Championship for the third year in a row, writes Adam Hodges.

The same group of basketball players from the academy in Desford became county champions when they were in Year 8 and have now successfully defended their title for two years running.

This year, the Bosworth Bears team faced off against Charnwood College at Leicester Riders’ Mattioli Arena and claimed a hard fought victory.

Bosworth Academy’s basketball coach Igor Mirković said to go three years undefeated is an “absolutely mind-blowing achievement, worthy of the history books!”

He added: “The plan is to go for the quadruple next year as well as going on to the national league to showcase their talent and ability.”

While the Year 10 students claimed the title, Bosworth Academy’s Under18

basketball team was also in County final action and finished runners-up to a tough opponent in Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.

Bosworth Academy head teacher Simon Brown said: “Not only did our students play brilliantly, they were professional, dignified and never gave up.

“Every player gave their very best, even in the face of true adversity, as the matches were so close.

“Our Year 10 team were crowned county champions for the third time in a row and our Sixth Form team were county runners-up.

“This is a true sign of great play, coaching and team spirit. I lost my voice in all the excitement!”

Coach Mirković said: “It has been a phenomenal year so far, with our programme carrying on after the Easter break. We are using the courts at Bosworth Academy for a summer league with a number of county schools having expressed an interest in taking part.”
