F4 champion to make debut in Porsche Carrera Cup

-

F4 champion and GB3 race winner Matt Rees will make his debut in the Porsche Carerra Cup GB this season with Desford-based Team Parker Racing.

The 18-year-old Welsh racer had a superb maiden season of car racing in 2021, securing the F4 British Championship title and Rookie Cup, and has been a front runner and race winner in two seasons in the GB3 Championship.

Rees is also part of the BRDC SuperStars programme, much like recent series champions Adam Smalley, Kiern Jewiss, and Harry King, all of whom competed with Team Parker Racing in their titlewinning seasons.

He will compete this year with the support of the Wera Tools Alliance Racing Academy which is an exciting young driver programme run by BTCC Champions Alliance Racing, and includes Sprint Challenge team-mate Will Jenkins.

Rees will be driving a Werabranded Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, competing in the Pro class as he sets his sight on the Rookie honours won last year by Team Parker’s Harry Foster.

The 2024 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season begins at the team’s local circuit of Donington Park over the weekend of April 27 and 28, taking in 16 races over eight meetings across the UK.

Rees said: “I’m excited to be racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB this season.

“The past two years didn’t exactly go to plan but we’re in a good place going with (team principal) Stuart (Parker) and Team Parker Racing.

“It’s a nice place to be and they have a proven track record.

“Kiern Jewiss came from F3 to the team and won the title, which shows that it can be done.

“Coming from a formula series, where it’s important to prepare the tyre for example, will be a help as I am used to that, and I’ve been having fun on the simulator, getting familiar with the car. “Going into Porsche opens a lot of new routes for me, looking at GT racing or prototypes, so I am excited about this new challenge.

“It’s nice to have the support of Wera Tools and knowing they believe in me means a lot, so I am grateful that they’re backing me this season.”
