‘Scary’ to think that a top team will miss out on promotion – KDH

AT least one top team will fail to earn promotion this season and that’s a “scary thought” for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as Leicester City aim to make sure they’re not the side to miss out.

With just a few weeks remaining in the campaign, four sides are on course to finish on more than 90 points.

Since the rebrand of the Championship 20 years ago, every team to pass 90 points has been automatically promoted, but this year, one or two of City, Ipswich, Leeds, and Southampton will remain in the second tier.

As things stand, City are in a position where their fate is in their hands.

Even though City have seen their lead inside the top two fall from 14 points to one, DewsburyHall would have snapped up the club’s current position had he been offered it at the start of the season.

Speaking to talkSPORT at the EFL Awards on Sunday night, where he was named in the Championship team of the season, Dewsbury-Hall said: “Fair play to teams like Ipswich and Leeds, they haven’t given us a rest all season.

“A lot of other years we might have been so comfortable. But they’ve always been on our tails.

“The good thing is it’s still in our hands.

“We know if we win all four, we’re up.

“At the start of the season, if you’d have told us that, I think we would have taken it.

“It’s a scary thought because there’s some top teams in this league that might not go up.

“For the neutral, it must be really exciting.

“For me, I’d rather it was more comfortable.

“I’d have much rather been here tonight knowing we can relax for the last couple of games. But that’s not the case.

“I’m sure it will go to the final day.

“We’ve got three weeks to get the job done. Whoever deserves it the most will go up.”

City have lost six of their last 10 and have just endured perhaps their worst week of results, losing away to relegation battlers Millwall and Plymouth.

Dewsbury-Hall mentioned the opposition’s fighting spirit, missed chances, and frustration as the causes behind the defeats.

“There have been games where we should have won, and you do start getting a bit worried when you don’t finish games off,” he said.

“It’s hard to put your finger on it. There’s no easy game in this league.

“We’ve been playing teams at the bottom but they’re fighting for their lives to stay in the division. It’s not like they’re going to whimper out.

“It’s a culmination of that, missing chances, a bit of frustration here and there.

“We know if we stick to the right things, then in games eventually we’ll get the rub of the green.

“That’s our mentality going into the final couple of games, doing the right things and hoping that will be enough to get us over the line.”
