Tables and chairs could close roads to traffic

-

ROADS could be closed to traffic in Burry Port to allow the town’s hospitality industry to put out tables and chairs to serve customers outdoors when they reopen.

Some pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in Wales will be able to reopen outdoors from July 13, under new Welsh Government plans.

The move to help with social distancing means venues will be able to open in outdoor spaces they own and have licences for, providing the number of coronavirus cases continue to drop.

The Burry Port street closures follow proposals in Carmarthen which could see its King Street closed to vehicles for a period of time to make social distancing easier and allow people to move in and out of shops more easily.

Carmarthenshire Council confirmed last week that it is undertaking a number of infrastructure audits across the county’s towns as part of recovery plans.

Burry Port county councillors Amanda Fox and John James are working with local businesses and the county council to plan ahead for the coming weeks.

In a statement, councillors Fox and James said: “We’ve been asked to work together with local businesses to look at closing roads in Burry Port and redesigning these areas so they would be pedestrianised.

“Hospitality businesses could put out chairs and tables and serve customers.

“This would also be advantageous for retail businesses by encouraging people to stroll along the streets and browse at the shops.”
