Aerial dogfight 80 years on It was on July 10, 1940, that locals witnessed a German Heinkel bomber screech overhead hotly chased by British Spitfires. It was one of the first of numerous Luftwaffe bombing raids centred on the Pembrey Ordnance Works; the largest TNT producer in Europe. Mr David M. Jones, now of Drefach, recalled that the German bomber pilot followed the Gwendraeth railway line up to Cwmmawr, as it turned, dropping the last of its deadly cargo. There was but one casualty, the death of a cow. Tragically, ten people at the gunpowder works had been killed during the earlier raid. Eighty years on the vision of a dogfight above the valley and the attendant howl of sirens and colliery hooters remains a grim memory for those few who experienced it.
