Ammanford goal heroes denied by a late leveller

-

AMMANFORD AFC shared an entertaining 2-2 draw at home with Risca United in JD Cymru South.

Ammanford were determined to grab the early initiative and take the game to their opponents from the first whistle and they didn’t have to wait long for the opening goal of the contest.

In the seventh minute Ammanford’s Lee Trundle was fouled around 25 yards from goal.

The former Swansea City star placed the ball as Risca formed their defensive wall and unleashed a shot that rocketed into the roof of the net, giving goalkeeper Joseph Massaro no chance.

It was vintage Trundle. Risca were initially rocked by the home side’s start to the game, but the visitors started to push back.

It took a good save from Ammanford goalkeeper Craig Morris with his feet to deny Risca an equaliser.

However, Risca were not to be denied and it was Ryan Wheeler who finished off a good passing move to level the scores.

As the first half drew to a close, a sublime individual run from Ammanford’s Tristan Jenkins – which started just inside Risca’s half – saw him slalom his way away from several defenders into the left edge of the penalty area.

He looked up and angled his cross-shot which was delivered with slide-rule precision into the far corner of the net to restore his team’s lead.

The second half saw Risca continue to try to find their way back into the game.

Ammanford looked to be coping well with their opponents, but in the 70th minute a cross into the home side’s box saw Risca centre-back Callum Hodges rise higher than anyone and he headed into the unguarded Ammanford net to level the scores again.

Ammanford tried to fight back as they went in search of a winner, but the defensive lines of Risca stood firm.

The visitors also had their moments, but in the end neither side could find the cutting edge to break the deadlock and at the final whistle both teams had to settle a point.

Ammanford will be no doubt disappointed with the draw but credit to Risca for coming from behind twice.

The draw leaves Ammanford 12th in the division.

They entertain fellow midtable side Trefelin BGC on Friday evening before the return fixture with Risca the following Friday.
