High-flying Ynys held as Rees strike earns point

-

CWMAMMAN United claimed a fine 1-1 draw at Ynysygerwn in Ardal League South West.

The point gained at the titlechasing Neath Valley side leaves Cwm 12th in the table.

Indeed, the visitors will have been disappointed to only come away with a draw after a fine display where they created a number of excellent chances in the first half.

Cwm were straight out of the blocks and in the second minute Ryan Hurlow found himself free in the box, but could not get his shot away in time.

Then Calem Rees was put through, only for the keeper to make a good save.

Cwm were playing at pace and Hurlow again broke through but his shot flew over the bar.

Cwm had another chance when Rees lobbed the oncoming keeper, but the ball hit the post and Hurlow could not steer the rebound home.

Cwm started the second half well with Hurlow beating the defence but his shot went just wide.

Ynys were now starting to impose themselves and a direct cross following a bounce ball restart found Shaun Williams at the back post and he headed home.

A good period of pressure from Ynys followed and Nathan McNeil made two excellent saves.

Cwm continued to create opportunities with Ross Morgan, Keena Hinds, Geraint Rees and Kyle Ashord strong across the middle and they got their reward when a deflected clearance fell to the hard-working Calem Rees, who tucked his effort into the corner of the net.

Both sides went desperately searching for a winner, with Ynys having a goal disallowed for offside and Hurlow and Rees going close for Cwm.

On Saturday Cwm travel to Dinas Powys.

Meanwhile, Cwmamman’s reserves went down 3-0 to Pontardawe Town in FAW Cymru Reserves South West.

The Swansea Valley side prevailed despite having a man sent off in the 28th minute.

Ponty had the best of the opening stages but Cwm were unlucky as they defended a free-kick to see the ball skim off Grant Rees’s head into the net.

Ponty’s joy was short lived as Tomos Blizzard was sent off.

The outcome was effectively settled within the first three minutes of the second half with Pontardawe punishing mistakes with goals from Steffan Pryce and an excellent long-range strike from Arwel Rees.
