THE indoor athletics season began with the Welsh Athletics and Welsh Schools Indoor Combined Events Championsh­ips in Cardiff.

Carmarthen Harriers members Jessica Lee and Beatrice Morgan finished in third position in the under-18 and under-14 girls’ categories

Lee’s results: (60m hurdles (9.38); 800m (2:29.31); high jump (1.50m); long jump (5.53m); shot put (9.19m).

Morgan’s results: (60m hurdles (9.92); 800m (2:56.05); long jump (4.07m); shot put (7.28m).

Under-16 athlete Luned Defis finished in tenth overall. Her results: (60m hurdles (11.12); 800m (3:27.79); high jump (1.29m); long jump (3.98m); shot put (6.69m).

William Coles, Iwan Thomas and Steffan Davies competed at the British Athletics Cross Challenge Series in Milton Keynes.

There were two excellent thirdplace finishes for Coles (11:15) and Thomas (14:36) in the under-13 and under-15 boys’ age groups respective­ly, while Davies lined up in the under-17 men’s race (21:41).

Five weeks after the season got under way in the Welsh capital, fixture two of the John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League took place on a new course at Parc de Pugh in Brecon. With more than 1,000 athletes of all ages expected to attend from clubs across South Wales and the South West of England, it will also incorporat­e the West Wales Cross Country Championsh­ips for the second time.
