Start of ‘Safer Streets’ project

-

LLANELLI Town Council and the Llanelli Multicultural Network have started work on an ambitious ‘Safer Streets, Brighter Futures’ project to help members of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities in the town.

The project is being organised in partnership with St Paul’s Family Centre and the Llanelli Community Partnership. Funding has been provided by the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Fund. The project will look to deliver four community sessions and one community event, with workers and interpreters aiming to deliver the following outcomes for people from BAME communities so they will:

Have a better understanding of crime prevention measures and how to implement measures in their own homes to minimise opportunities for theft, burglaries, etc;

Feel safer in their local community; Meet and build a rapport with local NPT police teams, understand their role and the role of other statutory organisations;

Have a better understanding and more confidence in reporting crime;

Have increased awareness of “suspicious” behaviour and how to report it to the police;

Have a better understanding of when to use 101 or 999;

Have access to resources, both written and digital, in their language or a format suited to their needs;

Have a better understanding of how the Victim Support system works;

Have a more in-depth understanding of the basics of the criminal justice system;

Be encouraged to be “Active Citizens”, be part of local forums and take part in initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watch.

The project will, for example, have sessions on how to protect personal property.

Written and digital resources will ensure that information will continue to be available to people after the end of the project.
