FERGIE’S GOAL RESCUES POINT

-

CARMARTHEN Men’s Hockey Club drew 1-1 with Neath Seconds in a league match.

Both teams were looking to keep fine runs going. Carmarthen were undefeated at home this season, while Neath had won all six of their matches.

The teams set a relentless pace, with an early goal for Carmarthen disallowed having been deemed to not hit the backboard from a short corner.

Carmarthen continued to apply pressure, and an opening goal came from an incisive pass from midifelder

Osian Evans, which found top scorer Tom Ferguson. He duly buried the ball in the bottom corner, and the hosts led at half-time.

Neath upped the tempo even further in the second half and were rewarded with an equaliser from a spectacular piece of individual play.

The game remained tight, with both keepers forced into excellent saves, while Carmarthen were denied by the woodwork on two occasions.

Ferguson was named man of the match for his exploits in the final third.

Carmarthen look to end the first half of their season on a high at Swansea 6ths in their next game.

There was double success for Carmarthen Ladies’ second team, who won twice on the road in successive days.

The first victory came as they eased to a 6-1 win at Whitchurch Saints 6ths.

Carmarthen controlled play from the outset, holding Saints high with defenders Scarlett Mackenzie-Jones, Ellie Routley, Emily Stibbs and Delyth Rees cutting out breaks and midfielders Tirion Evans, Kate Howell,

Bella Witt, Poppy Mackenzie-Jones and Phoebe Burton creating plenty of chances.

After some excellent saves from the keeper, Carmarthen finally broke through to score and the first half ended 1-0.

Forwards Maya Davies, Charlotte Harries and Yasmin Burgess-Williams played some excellent onetwos after the break and their efforts were rewarded as Carmarthen scored five more goals to round off a convincing win.

Whitchurch broke away for a consolation which denied the visitors a clean sheet.

Davies bagged a hat-trick, player of the match Burgess-Williams scored twice and Howell also netted.

And Carmarthen followed up with a 4-2 win at Pembrokeshire Seconds in a cup match.

The visitors opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes and some fine play saw them end the opening half 3-0 ahead.

Carmarthen continued to play well, but Pembrokeshire upped their game and managed to break through twice to make the score 3-2.

Finally, Carmarthen scored again to give themselves a little breathing space and defenders Leia Thomas, Delyth Rees and Ellie Routley kept Pembrokeshire out of their D and the match ended 4-2.

Goals were scored by Charlotte Harries, player of the match Siriol Richards (2) and Tirion Evans.
