STUDENTS from Llanelli’s Coedcae School are set to be money smart after the school received funding from Principality to deliver qualifications in financial education.

Principality’s funding will support Coedcae School in the delivery of The London Institute of Banking and Finance’s (LIBF) Lessons in Financial Education (LiFE) qualification to students.

The Level 2 qualification equips young people with the skills to appreciate and manage their finances effectively, covering topics such as sources and uses of money, personal budgeting, money management decisions and careers in the financial services industry.

In 2021, 56 students at Coedcae School gained a GCSE equivalent qualification in Financial Capability and Careers Development from funding by Wales’ largest building society.

Robert Coslett, assistant head teacher at Coedcae School, said: “We’re delighted to be receiving the funding from Principality to be able to support more of our year 11 students with financial education qualifications.

“We want to ensure our students are best prepared for the future and the LIBF qualifications do just that, giving them the knowledge and skills to be able to make sound financial decisions when they leave school, as well as helping them to progress onto further study.

“Our students who have previously completed the qualifications have told us how beneficial they have found the learnings and we’re so proud of their achievements.”

Vicky Wales, chief customer officer at Principality Building Society, said: “It’s so important that we equip young people with the skills to be financially confident in the future. The qualifications from the LIBF are a brilliant way to engage students in the subject of financial education and managing their finances. Coedcae School have been dedicated to promoting financial education throughout the school, and we are delighted to be funding more opportunities for the students to develop these key life skills and learnings.”

Debi Howell, financial capability relationship manager, The London Institute of Banking and Finance, said: “Our partnership with Principality

Building Society is so important to us to reach and support as many schools and students in providing valuable financial education in Wales.

“Coedcae School have embedded financial education into their curriculum and are leading the way in delivering excellent financial skills to their students and now to their parents. “Rob Coslett has pioneered offering our LiFE qualification to their wider community this month and already 29 parents have registered. This exciting new initiative will see parents supported by Coedcae School, Principality Building Society and LIBF. We are hoping that this first of its kind collaboration will be extended across Wales in 2022.” Principality Building Society has recently launched a fund of £100,000 for secondary schools and community groups across Wales to deliver The London Institute of Banking and Finance qualifications.
