Some vital work is needed in the town

-

IT is heartbreaking for most of us who have grown up in Llanelli to see the town in its current deplorable state.

A recent report states that Llanelli’s economy has risen by just 3% in 10 years, the lowest figure in Wales; Swansea’s growth stands at 80%, Cardiff’s must be 100% and a recent visit to Carmarthen shows that it is thriving as well.

It is vital that work starts on the regeneration of our town this year. The projects that must be started if not completed during the year are as follows:

1. Pentre Awel Llanelli at Delta Lakes.

2. Stepney Street/Market Street development (the old Altalia building).

3. The Links development (linking Market Street to Eastgate).

4. Tinopolis takeover of the Crown Building.

5. Plans for the redevelopment of the old Tinopolis (old Tesco building) for retail.

6. Compulsory purchase and restoration of Park Church.

7. Redevelopment of former Raffles Club.

8. Tyisha Action Plan.

9. Hotel at Machynys.

10. Housing development at old Pontrilia factory, North Dock.

11. Further leisure development in the North Dock area.

12. Development of the Old Castle works.

13. The new pedestrian bridge linking Pemberton to Trostre.

14. The completion of the restoration of the old Odeon cinema.

15. A concentrated effort to fill all the empty units in Eastgate and any other empty units owned by the council.

Many of the above will be private developments, but the council must provide support and assistance and also must do more to promote this town, its location and assets.

One of the greatest assets that the town possesses is the Millennium Coastal Park but the council seems to have stopped any further development and promotion of this asset by not providing a tourist information officer and tourist information centre at the Discovery Centre, but instead have turned the whole building into a large restaurant.

This is most disappointing – perhaps we need some changes in key positions in the council and have more council meetings in Llanelli.
