CUP GLORY FOR YOUNG QUINS

-

CARMARTHEN Quins’ junior teams excelled in Llandeilo at the finals of the Carmarthenshire Cup.

First up were the under-12s. They reached the final after beating Llandovery, Penybanc and then Felinfoel in the semi-finals.

They took on a much bigger Newcastle Emlyn team in the final, but the Quins took an early lead. Emlyn battled back and held the advantage until the final eight minutes when the Quins – who were 22-12 down at the time – pounced to score two converted tries to take victory and the cup 26-22.

The under-13s faced an Amman United side coached by Wales legend Shane Williams. In a free-flowing game, the young Quins claimed victory by crossing for five tries and adding three conversions.

The under-15s made it through to the final after wins over Kidwelly,

Llandovery-Llandeilo and Tumble. They faced a combined LampeterAberaeron team in the final and five tries helped them to record a 34-25 success.

To have three cup-winning teams who will go on to the regional finals at Parc y Scarlets on May 15 is an outstanding achievement.

The Quins’ under-16s battled valiantly but were unable to overcome a committed Llandeilo side who took the silverware with a 29-17 triumph.

The Quins had reached the final thanks to wins over Tumble and Carmarthen Athletic, who they defeated 17-15 in the closing seconds.

The under-14s didn’t make it to the Carmarthenshire Finals having been knocked out of the Plate at the semifinal stage by eventual winners Amman United. The Quins had reached the last four by seeing off Tumble (21-15) and Pontyberem (36-5).
