LLANELLI Rotary Club has launched a new project to help young children be more aware of ‘Stranger Dangers’ and other risky situations.

Rotarians have been busy distributing copies of a new book called Watch Out!, which has been produced by the team at OK – Our Kids.

So far, books have been delivered to 24 schools in Llanelli, Llangennech and Five Roads.

“It’s been a big campaign for us,” said Rotary President Ieuan Griffiths.

“Educating children about the everyday dangers they might encounter is very important to us and the Llanelli Rotarians have been very energetic in their promotion of the book to schools.

“The book has been produced by the OK - Our Kids charity set up by Tony and Lynn Churchill to help young children deal confidently with the dangers of staying safe at home, at school and in the community.

“The book features 36 dangers, ranging from bullying, knives and weapons to internet awareness and emotional wellbeing. The book is suitable for all children between the ages of five and 11.

“Watch Out! is 80 well-illustrated pages about the dangers children may face while growing up – and it includes links to get held and advice.

“The book has been written by professionals in their own field and produced by very passionate, caring people who want to save young children from harm.”

Llanelli Rotary Club secretary Alison Evans said: “Demand from the schools has been high, so we’ve almost had to ration schools to 35 copies each of the book.

“One of the first schools to receive copies was Heol Goffa special school in Llanelli and the feedback we have had from both pupils and teachers has been tremendous.

“We’ve also had some great feedback and words of appreciation from parents and guardians, who recognise that Llanelli Rotary is doing its bit to help keep children safe.”

Mrs Evans said that copies of the book were accompanied by a Mistakes and Ladders board game.

She added: “The game has, like the book, been very well produced and is just the job for its target audience.

“Children use the board game to learn by making mistakes. There are 65 Snake and 65 Ladder cards each with a different question with its answer.

Mrs Evans said that Llanelli Rotary club had developed a special relationship with the team at OK – Our Kids.

“We’ve been helping the authors and the charity with developing a Welsh language version of the Watch Out! book.

“Five Roads School pupils have been working on pictures to illustrate the Welsh version and Lyhn and Tony Churchill are coming down to Llanelli the judge the artwork to decide what goes into the Welsh language book.”
