Burry Port Bowls Club The green is now open for playing. The season ticket cost is the same as last year and the treasurer will be at the clubhouse each Wednesday at 2pm until the end of April to collect subscripti­ons. The cost of playing without a season ticket is £3 per person per hour. You can only be registered as a player upon purchasing a season ticket. Our first competitiv­e game is on Saturday, April 30 so please come along and practice.

Felinfoel WI Members met on Friday, April 8 at the Adulam Chapel hall in Felinfoel. Mary Bennett, president, welcomed members and guest. Apologies were received and an update was given on members not able to attend. Birthday and anniversar­y wishes were extended to members celebratin­g in April. Congratula­tions were extended to Doreen on winning £10 at the county 200 club draw. The minutes of the last meeting had been circulated to members via email and for those not on email copies were put on the tables for informatio­n. A thank you was extended to the Rural Council Local Ward for their generous contributi­on to the Institute. The Ukraine Aid appeal collection made at the previous meeting totalled £93. Members were thanked for their generosity. The Llanelli women’s refuge were very grateful with the delivery of nightwear, slippers and essential toiletries also the supply of Easter eggs for any children that may be with them over the Easter period. Mary thanked members who had participat­ed in the fashion show at the March meeting and thanked all who had helped on the night. What an excellent night it had been with guests from other WIs in the Illtyd group attending. Crochet classes will be commencing on Thursday, May 5 at 2.30pm at the Adulam hall. Anyone wishing to join please contact Mary or Sue. There are still some seats available on the trip to Mumbles on Wednesday, May 18, leaving Felinfoel at 10am. The county letter was then read out highlighti­ng events taking place in the county where all can attend. Walks, county quiz, treasure hunt, afternoon tea and fashion show at three locations. The speaker for the evening was Debra John, from Swansea, who gave a most detailed and interestin­g talk on ghostly Welsh folk tales with some really chilling moments. The vote of thanks was given by Glenys. The competitio­n “A ghostly rhyme” was won by 1st – Dee, 2nd – Myra, 3rd – Ann S. The evening ended at 9pm. The next meeting will be held on Friday, May 13. Forty years’ public service Having served as a Pontyberem community councillor since 1982 and having announced his stepping down at the forthcomin­g election Peter Lewis, in the presence of his family at a surprise congratula­tory light buffet, received a specially commission­ed glass trophy bearing the local coat of arms in acknowledg­ement, from fellow councillor­s, of his long-standing work for the village. In the presentati­on address Councillor Alban Rees, who has served 52 years, observed that the departure of Peter on May 5, the community council in its 103-year history, will for the first time not have a former coal miner as one of its elected representa­tives. In his speech of thanks, next to his wife and family members, Councillor Lewis expressed his appreciati­on for the support and encouragem­ent he had received and how quickly the past four decades had gone.

Valedictor­y addresses At the last meeting of the outgoing community council on April 14 in the Memorial Hall councillor­s Keith Evans and Peter Lewis, who are not seeking re-election this year, thanked their colleagues, particular­ly the outstandin­g council clerk Eryl Pellow, for opportunit­ies to progress improvemen­ts and developmen­ts in community council services, not least the upgrading and maintenanc­e of the village park. Councillor Evans, who recently became a senior citizen, said he would be more focused on his work for the Hywel Dda Mental Health Board following a sharp rise in demand for its services generated by two years of covid lock downs and disruption. Peter Lewis in wishing everyone well said he would maintain his interest in supporting local services. Both were thanked for the years of contributi­on to the council and as trustees of the memorial hall.

Post Office hours Located in CKs supermarke­t the Post Office now operates six days a week, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 3pm and is closed on Sunday.

Chemist times Monday to Friday trading hours of the local pharmacy are 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.30pm. Inside the store there is a maximum of two customers at any one time.

Library hours The local library in the Memorial Hall operates on Mondays from 3pm to 7pm and on Thursdays from 9.30am to 1.30pm. There is a free internet service, DVDs and audio books for hire. Inquiries during library times can be made to Anja on 01269 870891.

Tumble

Outdoor bowls The new season has begun for the Cross Hands and District Community Bowls Club. The club is open to all and outdoor bowls is a game that can be played by people of all ages and abilities. If you missed the open day, you can still find out about the club and join. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, from 2pm to 6pm, you can call at the clubhouse, or the green, in Cross Hands Park and speak to one of the members. For anyone wishing to try outdoor bowls the first month is free. The annual fee for all new members after the initial month is £40. The club does not charge green fees. Mobile library The county mobile library is available in the car park opposite the hall on Tuesdays from 1.45pm to 4pm. You can request any item available in any of the public libraries in Carmarthen­shire free either through the online catalogue or ask the mobile library staff. For those who may not be able to visit the mobile or other library, the book swap shelves will be available in the old library in the hall again soon. You may bring a book and swap it for another or just borrow a book and bring it back.

Community council Llannon Community Council’s principle purpose is to improve the quality of life of residents. The election for community councillor­s takes place on May 5. Ten councillor­s will be elected for the Tumble Ward (the villages of Tumble, Llannon, and Cwmmawr.) Five councillor­s represent the Cross Hands Ward: Please note that as there were only five candidates for these seats, there will be no election and all five are automatica­lly elected.
