HISTORY MADE AS DAVE CLAIMS TITLE

-

WITH the Premier division of the Llanelli and District Bowls League postponed on Saturday due to National Club competitions, teams took the opportunity to get in some extra practice.

At Llanelli Bowling Club, a little bit of history was made as the internal Two-wood Singles and Pairs competitions were held over a six-hour period.

The Pairs matches were completed over the lunchtime period, with club captain Brian Richards, accompanied by Ieuan Wilds, taking the honours.

However, it was the lengthy Singles that provided a historical moment in the afternoon, as the final two – who had both played in the Pairs – completed their 50th end of Singles after a marathon effort.

The winner was Dave Davies, and at 91 he became the oldest person in the club’s 116-year existence to win the competition.

There was only a small amount of joy for the Carmarthenshire clubs playing their first-round matches in the National Championship.

Only Loughor managed to secure a win when they defeated Barry Romily 108-65.

They now progress to the second round on July 9 when they will entertain Beaufort, who defeated Havelock Park.

Graig Merthyr were well beaten at Harlequins despite leading at the three-quarter stage, and the muchfancied Kidwelly Town lost by single shot (84-83) to Cwmbran Park at Parc Stephens.

In the Llanelli and District League, just a single midweek match was played in the Premier division with high-flying Loughor taking the spoils in a home game against Graig Merthyr.

In division one, Carmarthen continued their winning run at Gorseinon but were then brought back down to earth on Saturday when they were defeated at St Peters by unbeaten Tybie.

Ty’rfran suffered a similar fate after beating Parc William at home on Wednesday, but they visited Dafen Welfare at the weekend and were heavily beaten.

Cross Hands and Ammanford Town remain unbeaten in division two after they both produced home wins at the weekend and they are opening up a considerable gap at the top of the table.
