Royal repeat as Evans gets Rohaan flying

- Kevin Hire

WE have a short break from racing at Ffos Las until our flat meetings start on Monday, July 4.

It is an evening fixture with seven races starting at 5.50pm. Advance tickets are two for the price of one and we also have a great-value package in Bridles Restaurant priced at £49 per person.

All the details are on our website. We also race on July 11 and July 25, both of which are Monday fixtures.

There was Welsh success at Royal Ascot when the David Evans-trained Rohaan bounced back to form with a bang by taking the Wokingham Stakes for the second year in a row.

The owners were seriously considering retiring the four-year-old after seven poor runs since his triumph in the 2021 race, while he was also badly cut after falling on the gallops. A few weeks ago his work at home suddenly improved and it seemed he was his old self again.

Ryan Moore was convinced enough to take the ride. Among the back markers at halfway, he produced dazzling acceleration to come through the field and win.

In reply to being asked at what stage he thought he would win, Moore said: “Twoand-a-half furlongs out. I wasn’t sure what he was going to do, but then he started coming and I knew he’d win then.”

Rohaan is owned by Crystal Palace footballer James Tomkins and club coach Dean Kiely. Rohaan, who went off at 18-1, provided Moore with his 73rd Royal Ascot winner.

Expect to see the horse in Group company next time.

Christian Williams and Peter Bowen spotted a race at Perth on Saturday with above-average prize money for modest novice chasers. Williams entered Aye Aye Charlie, who had lost 12 times over fences and never tasted success, and the 10-yearold found his level as Jack Tudor was able to steer him safely home to collect the £7,407 first prize.

Gordon Elliott and Sean Bowen resumed their successful forays to Scotland with Copperwell taking Perth’s maiden hurdle. Their combined strike rate at the track is 48 per cent.

Peter and Sean Bowen were at Worcester on Sunday and combined to win the opener with Dalkingstown. This dour stayer needed every yard to overhaul his main market rival.

The final race also went to Wales via Bernard Llewellyn’s Canal Rocks. Charlie Price drove Canal Rocks into the lead on the run-in.
