Downpours a pain as derby ends in stalemate

-

RAIN ruined the Premier West Division match between Ammanford Seconds and Carmarthen Wanderers Seconds at The Park.

Ammanford won the toss and invited the Wanderers to bat on what was a tricky weatheraffected wicket.

Opener Andrew Harley (26) got the innings off to a decent start, but when he departed wickets began tumbling due to poor shot selection.

The Ammanford slip cordon had a field day, taking five good catches as the visitors fell to 60-6.

Young Jac Bennett then attacked the bowling and hit an aggressive 25 off only 12 balls, before the rain arrived.

With the game reduced to 30 overs, Giles Thomas and Simon Rogers looked to utilise all the remaining balls and set a competitive total.

But the heavens opened again, leaving the Wanderers on 91-7 after 22 overs and the captains decided to abandon the game.

Llanelli’s visit to Ynysygerwn also bcame a victim of the weather.

The Neath Valley side had reached 147-3 when constant rain forced an early end to proceedings.

Ynysygerwn opener Aled Davies made 67 before he was caught and bowled by Aled Gilley.

The only match in the division which did reach its conclusion was at Clydach, where the home side defeated Gorseinon by seven wickets.

Gorseinon were all out for 150 after being asked to bat first. Opener Robert Morgan led the way with 43, with skipper Chris Richards adding 30.

Harry Edwards and Koel Palmer both took three wickets for Clydach.

The Swansea Valley side took little time in reaching their target as they raced to 152-3 in just 18.4 overs.

Opener Osian Davies was unbeaten on 68, with Dan Rees making 32.

Scott Barlow took 2-38 for Gorseinon.

The game between Swansea and Pontarddulais was called off without a ball being bowled.

At the halfway stage of the season, Pontarddulais lie fourth. Ammanford are eighth, just ahead of Llanelli, with the Wanderers and Gorseinon filling the next two places.

In this Saturday’s matches, Llanelli entertain Carmarthen Wanderers, Ammanford make the trip to Mumbles, Pontarddulais host Neath and Gorseinon head to Port Talbot Town.
