Funding to tackle erosion and flooding welcomed
FUNDING has been secured to tackle coastal erosion and flooding in four areas of the Llanelli constituency.
Penyfan, Bynea, Llangennech and Kidwelly will receive a total of just under £250,000 for flood and costal erosion management schemes.
The Welsh Government scheme will benefit around 650 homes across the four areas.
Following the announcement, Lee Waters, MS for Llanelli and deputy minister for climate change, has welcomed said: “I saw firsthand the devastating effects of flooding when I visited Kidwelly last year to speak to residents whose homes had been impacted.
“There are very real risks posed by climate change - over the next 50 years large parts of Llanelli and surrounding areas could be below sea level.
“I am glad the Welsh Government are providing this funding and I hope it is of some relief to the around 650 homes, many of which have experienced flooding in the past.” The projects will be led by Carmarthenshire Council and Natural Resources Wales. In March, Welsh Government announced that more than £214m will be spent over the next three years in Wales to help manage the increasingly violent flooding associated with climate change.
Huge swathes of the country could be left underwater due to the impacts of man-made global heating, according to the latest Welsh Government assessments.
Figures show that across Wales, 245,000 homes are at risk of flooding and there will be an increase in river flows with higher rainfall (especially in winter) with around 11.3% of the country at risk of flooding from the sea - this is up from 9.86% last time they were reviewed.
The data does not take into account future flood defences and reflects the current situation.
