Flame of Olympic torch ‘extinguished in protests’
THE Olympic torch relay fell into chaos and its flame was extinguished when the parade hit protests in a Brazilian coastal town, it was claimed today.
The relay came to Angra dos Reis, south of Rio de Janeiro, as teachers protested over unpaid wages. Videos online appear to show a runner with an unlit torch being ushered away by security and standing in a bus. A Rio 2016 source said: “There are a number of lanterns carrying the flame from the same source in Olympia so it is never extinguished.”
