New Spurs stadium creates 1,000 jobs

- Lizzie Edmonds

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR has created its 1,000th job from the construction of its new multi-million-pound stadium in north London.

Spurs said the jobs have been across a range of industries — including construction, IT, hospitality, retail and sport.

Since 2013, the football club has worked with Haringey council and the Department for Work and Pensions to create as many jobs as possible from the development, with most going to local residents. Applicants have also had help with CVs and training via the scheme. It is hoped about 3,700 jobs will be created in total, with £293 million pumped into the local economy each year.

One of those to benefit is Luke Leone, a former student of Highgate Wood School in Haringey, who has been taken on as an apprentice by construction firm Morrisroe. He said he had always wanted to work in construction, adding: “I have more structure and organisation to my work and life.”

Spurs hope the new ground, which is being built around the existing White Hart Lane venue, will be ready in time for the 2018/19 season.

Club chairman Daniel Levy said: “Creating opportunities for residents living on our doorstep is fundamental to what we are aiming to achieve through this project, and the hard work does not stop here.

“Just this week, we held a construction jobs fair for veterans of our armed forces and this level of outreach will continue over the coming years.”
