WARHOL PHOTO UP FOR SALE

- Robert Dex

AN EARLY self-portrait by Andy Warhol — made with pictures taken in a New York photobooth — has gone on show at Sotheby’s ahead of its sale.

The picture, which dates from about 1963, is expected to make £7 million. It is one of four works by the US artist going under the hammer next Wednesday. Warhol, who died in 1987, aged 58, was already famous for his celebrity portraits of stars including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor when he created the print, which has never before come up at auction.

Also up for sale are two works Warhol created with fellow artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and a portrait he made of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong which is valued at about £800,000.
