Margaret celebrates her 100th birthday

-

A SECOND World War nurse from Kegworth has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

Margaret Harpin reached the milestone on March 10 and was joined by friends at St. Andrew’s Parish Church for a gathering last week.

After Margaret’s father was killed in the First World War, her mother had to find employment and so moved to Kegworth as the district nurse in 1920.

Margaret then followed in her mother’s footsteps and trained to become a nurse at Charing Cross Hospital in London.

During the Second World War, she was a Queen Alexandra’s nurse in the Middle East and also worked in Exeter, York and Lincoln during her career.

Margaret, whose mother also lived to be 100, moved into Westroyd House Care Home in Shepshed around four years ago but still regularly attends the monthly coffee mornings held at St Andrew’s Parish Church in Kegworth with her second cousin Mary Lord.
