Whitmore celebrates victory in Coventry

LOCAL ATHLETES were in action across the country at the weekend as the season gathers pace ahead of the spring marathons.

The Ashby 20 proved a popular race with runners from Charnwood AC, Shepshed Running Club and Poplar Running Club battling against the blustery conditions.

Poplar Ladies captain Nicola Holmes finished second in a time of 2:15:00 while Shepshed RC contingent were lead home by Ian Benskin in 84th place in a time of 2:17:30. Other Shepshed results were: 115th: Paul Wooldridge 2:20:25, 212th: John Harris 2:30:29, 259th: Jerry Cook 2:35:33, 576th: Stuart Hunter 3:07:38.

Charnwood AC’s Katie Lomas finished in a time of 2.19.18, just behind Steve Owens 2.19.12, with Natalie Wettler, and Kate Champneys, 2.29.29, and 2.29.32 respective­ly.

Elsewhere, Charnwood AC’s Tom Whitmore competed in the Coventry half marathon and won the event with a time of 1.12.52. At the Reading Half, Mark Couldwell finished in 36th 1.10.50, and Michael Kingsbury 1.17.46. Gemma Steel finished second lady in 1.13.37.

Shepshed RC’s Emily Muddimer and Shiela Carruthers took part in the Keyworth Trail 15k with Muddimer 69th in 1:39:00 and Sheila Carruthers 83rd in 1:41:35.
