New life for Winnie’s newsagents

AKASH Tandoori in Charnwood Road has been granted permission to extend into the former Winnie Elliott newsagent shop next door.

Winnie Elliott, who served generation after generation for 74 years, passed away in 2015.

Applicant Mr LR Chowdhury submitted an application to Charnwood Borough Council at the end of last year seeking permission to change the use of the ground floor at 69 Charnwood Road from retail (Class A1) to hot food takeaway (Class A5).

The application, which has now been given the green light, also includes plans to change the first floor into a residential flat (Class C3).

Documents submitted by agent AGB Design Consultants Ltd state that its client has been running Akash Tandoori at 67 Charnwood Road for around 30 years.

The statement goes on to say that their client has bought the former newsagents next door and was seeking consent for a change of use so it could be used as an extension to the existing Akash Tandoori business.
