Pride of Charnwood awards
THE INSPIRING achievements of young people in Charnwood was celebrated at the sixth annual Pride of Charnwood Awards.
Organised by the Charnwood Youth Council, with support from Charnwood Borough Council and Above and Beyond Community Interest Company, on behalf of Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, the awards that were partnered by The Central England Co-operative were held at Lynroys in Loughborough on Tuesday, March 14.
The top award - The Pride of Charnwood Award- went to Megan Taylor, 18, for her work at Steps Conductive Education Centre in Shepshed.
Megan is an apprentice at Steps and assessor Rachael Gallop nominated her for the award.
Megan said: “I am completely gobsmacked and don’t know what to say, I just can’t believe I’ve won.”
Megan Langham, 18, won the Caring for Others Award and is currently working on an unpaid supported internship at a care home for the elderly.
Megan said: “I’m over the moon and I have loved working with the residents at the care home.”
Ebony Horton, from Charnwood College received the Pride of Charnwood Award for Creativity, and told the Echo: “I just want to try and make a difference to other young people.”
The award for Helping the Community went to 1st Loughborough Company Boys’ Brigade.
The Boys’ Brigade has helped many people over the last year and David Dyson, one of the leaders said: “The boys have made a real difference in the community this year.”
The Youth Group of the Year award went to Shelthorpe Youth Club, and Jit Singh, leader of the Shelthorpe club collected the award.
Jit said: “The boys are fantastic, they really reflect a great image of the youth of Shelthorpe.”
Perhaps the most inspiring story was that of a teenager from Ethiopia who was nominated by Baca Charity, who won the Personal Achievement Award.
The 19-year-old was nominated by Beth Smith at Baca and she said: “We are so proud of her for her bravery and strength.”
The Special Commendation Award went to Shane Tett, 17, who is a student at Loughborough College and was nominated by his former maths teacher Kate Wright who said: “Shane demonstrated great strength of character over the year and his progress was outstanding.”
Coun Pauline Ranson, who is Deputy Mayor of Charnwood presented the Pride of Charnwood Award and said: “It has been an absolute honour and a pleasure to be here.”
