FAMOUS NAMES FROM HISTORY. Sutton Bonington members of the popular Soar Valley U3A group were among those attending the annual meeting at Normanton on Soar Village Hall, when the guest speaker was Roy Smart who make a return visit to deliver another of his highly popular talks on ‘Famous Names from History’.

He featured Amy Johnson, the pioneering English aviator of the 1930s and who died in a tragic accident after baling out of her plane in to the icy waters of the River Thames in London.

The fisherman’s daughter had become a global superstar by being the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia .

The intrepid adventurer followed up her astounding 1930 feat in a biplane by setting records for the fastest flights from Britain to Japan, South Africa, and India.

She also became the first person to fly from London to Moscow in a single day.

Amy was beacon to generations of girls who dreamed of breaking free from domestic drudgery for a life of romance and adventure.

And her legacy lives on, even 75 years after death. Budget airline easyJet has named a plane after her and doubled the number of female pilots this year at its Amy Johnson Flying Initiative.

If you’re retired, or semi retired, you are welcome to join the group which provides relaxed learning and leisure activities for retired people in the area. For more information phone membership secretary Lorna Orton on 01332 811030 or visit their website http:// u3asites.org.uk/soar-valley

“It is with his support and encouragement that we have been able to continue the ongoing repair work and general maintenance work required to keep our two churches in the good state they are in today. The PCC committee now has eleven members and the Church Wardens are up to strength thanks to the addition of Jill Crawford.”

She continued: “It is with much pleasure that we have been able to have the grounds of Sutton Bonington Hall to stage the summer fete and we extend a big thank you to Edward and Claire for allowing us access.”

“There will be ongoing changes to all the volunteers who give their time and expertise to make attending our services that little bit special, the flowers, the teas and coffee, the music, the bells, the ladies who clean, to name but a few of the many, long may they continue,” added the chairman.
