CHARITY CONCERT RESULT. East Leake Academy Year 9 students James Dack and Erin Doherty are delighted with what they termed the ‘fantastic’ result of their Charity Concert held in the parish church and which raised

£673 towards the funds they need to enable them to go next year to central Ghana with other Academy students to help build a new school for pupils there. The two teenagers say that their trip to Ghana will see them taking part in a community project to build a kindergarten that is currently being built but which at the moment only has a roof.

“It does not have any walls or a solid floor which means that it cannot be used during wet and windy weather,” says Erin.

James says the team they will be involved in will create a solid floor, make the bricks and build the walls, thus allowing the children the education they want.

Both Erin and James have to raise £2150 to meet the cost of their trip and are busy raising that now and are about halfway towards their target.

The Charity Concert at St Mary’s featured Charnwood Concert Band, and Charnwood Training Band and the two teenagers said both bands received lots of very positive comments from the audience members. The programme was a very varied and contained medleys from musicals, film theme tunes and lots of well known tunes.”

Both Erin and James will be at Rushcliffe Country Park at Ruddington on May 14 serving teas and coffee to those invovled in the Park Run.

REVIEW OF THE GREEN BELT. East Leake parish council has responded in detail to Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Green Belt Review and have submitted their comment for consideration by them.

“We have responded in detail to previous Green Belt reviews, and the general points we have made still apply and we would like them to be considered again,” they say, adding they feel

East Leake is currently suffering from not being within the Green Belt, whereas the other “key settlements” identified in Rushcliffe’s Core Strategy do have Green Belt protection.

“The delay in the Green Belt Review and Part 2 of the Local Plan is having a severe impact on East Leake, as one of the few areas in the Borough where development can take place without release of Green Belt land. ,” adding they the village is experiencing uncontrolled, explosive developer-led housing growth without the necessary improvements to infrastructure.

“Our first point therefore is that the process of releasing land from the Green Belt needs to speed up. The second point is one that we have made before. If the green belt “ring” protecting Nottingham is being weakened by release of land, then Green Belt should be created further out to maintain the protection of settlements from merging with Nottingham.

“One particular concern for East Leake is loss of separation from Gotham, which will itself have its separation from Nottingham reduced by the strategic allocation South of Clifton --when this eventually gets under way.”

Suggestions in the current Rushcliffe thinking involving Gotham would bring that village and East Leake closer together, pointing out as the Ridgeway housing, British Gypsum site, and Golf Course all lie between the two settlements, there is very little genuine open countryside between the two villages..

“The fact that East Leake is not within the Green Belt does not mean that it should not maintain separation from Gotham,” says the parish.

The parish council say their final point is to do with the public perception of the term

“The government commitment in the White Paper to protect the Green Belt is likely to compound this misunderstanding, with people vaguely reassured that ‘green fields’ are being protected. Nothing could be further from the truth in East Leake, and we just wish to point out that the green fields that surround us are intrinsically as beautiful and environmentally/ agriculturally/recreationally valuable as those elsewhere in Rushcliffe”

HOLY WEEK MEETING. East Leake Mothers’ Union held a Holy Week meeting which also coincided with the Holiday Club. The meeting was held at 16 De Ferrers Close instead of as usual in St Mary’s Church and the speaker was the Rev’d. Pat Edwards. On the same evening there was a Compline with Women’s Group and hot cross buns.

There will be a Bingham Group event in East Bridgford today Wednesday April 19 from 1.30 pm – 4.00 pm. And East Leake members have been invited to it.

The branch has given a Thank you to all who have supported the Make a Mother’s Day appeal and to all who are took part in the Court Your Blessings effort during Lent.

NEW PATTERN OF WORSHIP. East Leake St Mary’s Church has introduced a new pattern of worship for some of its Sunday services.

From this month, it is changing its regular Sunday pattern of worship and launching two morning services, each with its own style.

The Rector the Rev Tim Parker Every says that on Sunday at 9.15am, there will be Parish Communion, with hymns, Bible teaching and a real sense of valuing the spirituality of the Eucharist.

Refreshments will follow from 10.15am, with space for both services to meet and share fellowship together. The second service will begin at 10.45am.

“This more contemporary service will have worship music led by the St Mary’s Music group, Bible teaching that looks a little deeper into the issues of living out faith today and activities for children during the service.” Says the Rev Tim.

This service will also include a celebration of Communion on the fourth Sunday of the month.

The Rev Tim says of course in the first few months there may be some kinks that need ironing out – but we hope to be able to offer our growing village two new services that enable more people to come and be a part of the life changing worship of Jesus Christ. The 8am and 6pm services will continue as usual.

SONG FOR LIFE. A Song For Life Gospel Music Day with Freddie Kofi is being staged at St Mary’s Church at East Leake on Saturday this week, April 22.
