Photo contest
SILEBY Photographic Society’s second round of the annual quarterly competition took place at the meeting held on Monday 10th April when visiting judge Bob Richards, LRPS, CPAGB, had the difficult and unenviable task of deciding the eventual winners on the night.
Colour and monochrome prints, together with digital images were once again entered for the competition, with each exhibit awarded marks to a maximum of twenty within its category.
The scores awarded would be added to those achieved in round one of the competition, which would then be carried forward to round three held later in the year.
Bob began his judging with the monochrome prints, which are of course these days being digital are firstly colour and then chosen by the entrant as suitable for monochrome treatment.
Bob made comment that some landscapes lend themselves to this as more detail is then brought out of the sky. Also, some images can be a little distracting if left in colour and look much better as monochrome.
Following monochrome came the colour prints and again Bob had the unenviable task of choosing between varied subject matter, and he made constructive comment on the position of images and getting them in the frame, and also presentation such as the cut of the frame, and trying square cut as the image dictates.
Bob was most impressed with vivid colour images which catch the eye. The digital images were next to be considered, and we had a large amount of natural history included in this category, with Robin having the aah factor! Architecture featured well too, with Bob preferring to see selected parts of buildings taken, thus making them more than a record shot.
As usual, a large number of entries were submitted for the competition and, after careful deliberation and constructive comments given for each exhibit, Bob announced the winners for the second round as follows: Monochrome Print- “Reflections of 4th Avenue” Bob Andrews, “The Engineers” Richard Storier. Colour Print-“Fish for Supper” and “Ruppell’s Griffon Vultures” Alun Williams, “Common Buzzard” Pete Smith. Digital Image“Greenfinch” Kevin Blood, “Steaming into the Abyss” Malcom Heaven.
Colin Machin thanked Bob for his excellent judging whereby he had been able to draw on his own considerable photographic skills and knowledge when awarding his marks.
Photographic standards had been high with a varied and diverse cross-section of subjects covered and, coupled with Bob’s own expertise in a judging capacity, a wonderful evening of photography had taken place.
The next meeting will be a presentation of NEMPF Exhibition images in a change to the advertised program and will take place on Monday, 24th April and may commence a little earlier.
Visitors and prospective members are always welcome to attend meetings which usually commence at 7.45pm for 8pm and are held at Sileby Community Centre.
