MPs say they will stand again

-

BOTH the Loughborough and Charnwood MPs have announced that they will be standing again in the snap General Election called on by the Prime Minister.

Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan told the Echo that she was shocked by the announcement made by Theresa May on Tuesday (April 18) but could see why she had called for an election.

MP for Charnwood Edward Argar also revealed he would be standing for re-election.

He told the Echo: “It’s a great privilege to represent the people of Charnwood in the House of Commons and I’ve spent the past two years working hard in the interest of my constituents.

“Giving them a voice in the House of Commons continues to be an important task.”

MP Nicky Morgan said: “It was a surprise and I think there has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks but I think it is a shock. However I do understand why she has done it.

“We all thought that if there was going to be an election then it wouldn’t be at the minute because we have the local county elections going on, but you know we have seven weeks now and we have to get ourselves prepared for it.

“I can understand why she has done it now though because I think it is right to want to go into Brexit negotia- tions with a strong group behind her.

“I will be standing again, and it is down to the people to decide whether they believe that I should represent them.

“But I would hope that the people of Loughborough would agree that I have been a strong voice in Parliament and I would hope that they would want me to carry on doing the same but at the end of the day it’s down to the people of Loughborough to decide.”

It is not known who the Labour candidate will be but Paul Boldrin chairman of the Loughborough Labour party, told the Echo: “The Labour Party welcomes the challenge and we are well prepared as we are in the middle of fighting the County Council elections. Only a Labour Government will stand up for local people, their families and the quality of services they need.”
