A ROTHLEY marathon runner joined a prestigious club at the weekend and raised cash for charity at the same time.

When 64-year-old Peter Finn crossed the finish line at the London Marathon on Sunday (April 23) he joined the 100 marathon club on the tenth anniversary of his first London Marathon, which he ran on behalf of learning disability charity Mencap. Since then, Peter has continued to fund-raise for the charity, and has raised over £54,000.

He has completed marathons all over the world, including New York, Singapore and Hong Kong and hasn’t let a hip replacement in 2013 stop him reaching the 100 marathon target.

On Sunday he completed the course in a time of 4:09:57 and said he was very proud of his achievement.

‘The London Marathon is the largest annual fund-raising event on the planet, so I was so proud to be there running my 100th marathon supporting Mencap.’

‘Every marathon is different and you never know what you’re going to get, but I was very lucky to have perfect running weather which helped me keep pace at around a nine minute mile, getting in at 4:09:57, a time I was more than happy with.

“Afterwards I received my 100th medal and shirt underneath Nelsons column; it was a truly indescribable moment, I was so chuffed!’

‘Running for Mencap means a lot to me, it was the charity my father sponsored and they do a lot of good for people with a learning disability; having a good start in life, free of prejudice, is something everybody should have the right to and that’s why I run for Mencap.”

Rachel Croshaw, fund-raising events manager at learning disability charity Mencap, said: “We are incredibly proud and honoured that Peter has supported Mencap over the years, and we want to say a huge thank you to him!

“The money he has raised has made a huge difference to Mencap and to people with a learning disability across the UK. All of the money has helped us to continue the charity’s work to support people with a learning disability and to ensure they are able to live life in the way that they choose.”
