Gypsy Rose Lee on stage

-

CHRISTCHURCH Theatre Club is set to take to the stage next week with a story based on the memoirs of the famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee.

From Monday, May 1, until Saturday, May 6, the theatre group will be presenting Gypsy at Loughborough Town Hall with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The main focus of the musical is on Rose, the archetypal stage mother, who raises Louise and her sister June as they travel around America with their vaudeville act.

The recent West End revival starred Imelda Staunton and won many Laurence Olivier awards in London. It was also choreographed by international choreographer Stephen Mear - a former member of Christchurch Theatre Club.

Liz Berrisford heads a talented cast as Rose with Lucy Maden as her daughter Louise – who becomes the world famous stripper Gypsy Rose Lee - and Anja Palmer as her daughter June.

And Christchurch Theatre Club is welcoming back Lee Costelow as Herbie after a break from performing on the Loughborough stage.

Lee has worked alongside the late Danny La Rue in La Cage Aux Folles as well as playing many leading roles for the company.

Gypsy will see a talented ensemble of performers and children come together and Bowie the dog will take on the role of Rose’s dog Chow Mein.

The musical features songs that have become show hits such as Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Some People, Let Me Entertain You and the hilarious You’ve Gotta Get a Gimmick.
